Vintage Rolex Oyster Perpetual “Bubble Back” – 18K Yellow Gold
Condition: Mint / Unworn
Specifications
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Bubble Back represents one of the most historically significant chapters in Rolex watchmaking. Produced primarily from the 1930s through the 1950s, these watches combined Rolex’s waterproof Oyster case architecture with its pioneering self-winding Perpetual movement. The pronounced domed case back—responsible for the collector nickname “Bubble Back”—provided the additional space required by Rolex’s early automatic winding mechanism.
Crafted in solid 18K yellow gold, this example takes the already collectible Bubble Back and gives it the warmth and elegance characteristic of Rolex’s early precious-metal watches. Bubble Backs were produced in numerous configurations, including steel, two-tone, and solid gold, with surviving examples displaying an extraordinary variety of dials, bezels, hands, and case designs. Period 18K yellow-gold examples are well documented, including references such as the 3372 and 4130.
What makes this particular piece especially compelling is its mint, unworn condition. Condition and originality are exceptionally important with Bubble Backs, as these watches are now approaching or exceeding 80 years of age and many surviving examples have experienced polishing, dial refinishing, replacement components, or extensive wear. An exceptionally preserved example offers collectors a rare opportunity to experience early Rolex craftsmanship much closer to its original state.
